✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ called me and said: “It has reached me that Khālid b. Sufyān b. Nubayḥ al-Hudhalī is gathering people against me to attack me, and he is at ʿArafa. Go to him and kill him.” I said: “O Messenger of God, describe him to me so I can recognize him.” He said: “When you see him, you will feel a shudder.” So I set out with my sword wrapped around me until I came upon him at ʿUrana with some women, seeking a place for them to camp, and it was the time of the afternoon prayer. When I saw him, I felt what the Messenger of God ﷺ had described—the shudder. I approached him, but I feared that if there were an encounter between us, it would distract me from the prayer. So I prayed while walking toward him, gesturing with my head for the bowing and the prostration. When I reached him, he said: “Who is the man?” I said: “A man from the Arabs who heard about you and your gathering against this man, so he came to you for that.” He said: “Indeed, I am engaged in that.” I walked with him a little, and when I had the opportunity, I attacked him with the sword until I killed him. Then I left, leaving his women bending over him. When I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and he saw me, he said: “The face has succeeded.” I said: “I have killed him, O Messenger of God.” He said: “You have spoken the truth.” Then the Messenger of God ﷺ stood up with me, took me into his house, and gave me a staff, saying: “Keep this with you, O ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays.” I went out with it among the people, and they said: “What is this staff?” I said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ gave it to me and commanded me to keep it.” They said: “Will you not go back to the Messenger of God ﷺ and ask him about it?” So I returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of God, why did you give me this staff?” He said: “It is a sign between me and you on the Day of Resurrection. The fewest people then will be those who carry staffs.” ʿAbd Allāh then tied it to his sword, and it remained with him until he died, when he instructed that it be placed with him in his shroud, and then we were both buried together.”
