✧ There was a man in the time of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb who had asked him for something and he gave it to him. He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Unays, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, sat with us in his gathering, in the gathering of Juhaynah—he said: in Ramadan. We said to him: “O Abū Yaḥyā, have you heard anything from the Messenger of God ﷺ about this blessed night?” He said: “Yes. We sat with the Messenger of God ﷺ at the end of this month, and we said to him: ‘O Messenger of God, when should we seek this blessed night?’ He said: ‘Seek it this night.’ He said: And that was the evening of the night of the twenty-third. A man from the people said to him: ‘So it is, then, O Messenger of God, the first of the last eight?’ He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: ‘It is not the first of the last eight, but it is the first of the last seven, for the month does not complete.’”
