✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had finished with the people of Badr, bringing a colt of mine. I said: O Muhammad, I have brought you the son of al-Qarḥāʾ for you to take. He said: I have no need of it, but if you wish I will barter with you for it the choicest coats of mail from Badr, I will do so. I said: I was not going to barter with you today after that. He said: Then I have no need of it. Then he said: O Dhu al-Jawshan, will you not become Muslim, and be among the first of this matter? I said: No. He said: Why? I said: I saw your people have become infatuated with you. He said: How did you hear about their death places at Badr? He said: I said: I heard. He said: I said: If you conquer Makkah and settle in it. He said: Perhaps if you live, you will see that. He said: Then he said: O Bilāl, take the saddlebag and provision him with some pressed dates. When I turned away, he said: Indeed he is among the best of Banū ʿĀmir. He said: By God, I was with my family at al-Ghawr when a rider came. I said: From where? He said: From Makkah. I said: What did the people do? He said: Muhammad ﷺ has conquered it. He said: I said: My mother has been bereaved of me! By God, if I had become Muslim that day, then asked him for al-Ḥīra, he would have granted it to me.
