✧ I met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on one of the roads of Madinah, and he was wearing a waist-wrapper of cotton with a ragged edge. I said, “Upon you be peace, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “Indeed ‘upon you be peace’ is the greeting of the dead; indeed ‘upon you be peace’ is the greeting of the dead; indeed ‘upon you be peace’ is the greeting of the dead. Say ‘Peace be upon you,’ say ‘Peace be upon you’ twice or three times. Like this.” He said, “I asked about the waist-wrapper and said, ‘Where should I wear it?’ He bent his back at the bone of his shin and said, ‘Wear it here. If you refuse, then here below that. If you refuse, then here above the ankles. If you refuse, then indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, does not love every arrogant boaster.’” He said, “And I asked him about good deeds, and he said, ‘Do not belittle any good deed, even if it is giving a rope’s end, even if it is giving a sandal strap, even if it is pouring from your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water, even if it is removing something harmful from people’s path, even if it is meeting your brother with a cheerful face, even if it is meeting your brother and greeting him, and even if it is comforting the lonely one in the land. If a man reviles you for something he knows about you, while you know the like of it about him, do not revile him, so that its reward will be yours and its sin will be upon him. Whatever pleases your ear to hear, act upon it; and whatever displeases your ear to hear, avoid it.’”
