✧ I passed by an old woman at al-Rabadhah who had been left behind from Banu Tamim. She said, “Where are you heading?” I replied, “We are heading to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” She said, “Carry me with you, for I have a need to bring to him.” So I entered the mosque, and it was crowded with people, and there was a black banner fluttering. I asked, “What is the matter with the people today?” They said, “This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ intending to send ‘Amr b. al-‘As on a mission.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, if you see fit to make al-Dahna’ a barrier between us and Banu Tamim, then do so, for it was ours once.” The old woman jumped up, seized by zeal, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, where will you press your Mudar?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I carried this woman without realizing that she would become an opponent against me.” I said, “I seek refuge in Allah from being like what the first one said.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “And what did the first one say?” He said, “You have fallen upon the expert.” Sallam says, “This is a fool. He says to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ‘You have fallen upon the expert.’” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Go on,” seeking more of the story. He said, “Indeed ‘Ad sent their delegate Qayl, and he stayed with Mu‘awiyah b. Bakr for a month, who gave him wine to drink while the two singing-girls sang to him. Then he set out until he reached the mountains of Mahrah and said, ‘O Allah, I have not come to ransom a captive or to heal a sick person, so give Your servant water as You used to give him, and give Mu‘awiyah b. Bakr water for a month, in gratitude for the wine he drank with him.’ Then black clouds passed by, and it was called out: ‘Take it as dust, scattered dust, leaving not one of ‘Ad.’”
