✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kalbī, of Kalb Layth, to Banū Mulawwaḥ at al-Kadīd, and ordered him to raid them. He set out, and I was in his detachment. We went on until when we were at Qudayd, we met al-Ḥārith b. Mālik—he is Ibn al-Barṣāʾ al-Laythī—and we seized him. He said: 'I have only come to become Muslim.' Ghālib b. ʿAbd Allāh said: 'If you have come as a Muslim, a day and a night of being tied up will not harm you; but if you are upon something else, we will secure ourselves from you.' He said: So he tied him up, then left a black man who was with us to guard him, saying: 'Stay with him until we pass by you. If he struggles with you, cut off his head.' He said: Then we went on until we came to the bottom of al-Kadīd, and we camped in the early evening after ʿAṣr. My companions sent me as a scout, so I went to a hill that would give me a view of the settlement. I lay flat on it, and that was at sunset. A man from among them came out and looked, and he saw me lying flat on the hill. He said to his wife: 'By Allah, I see on this hill a blackness that I did not see at the beginning of the day. Look, lest the dogs have dragged off some of your vessels.' He said: She looked and said: 'No, by Allah, I do not miss anything.' He said: 'Hand me my bow and two arrows from my quiver.' He said: She handed them to him, and he shot an arrow at me and placed it in my side. He said: I pulled it out and put it down, and I did not move. Then he shot another at me and placed it in the top of my shoulder. I pulled it out and put it down, and I did not move. He said to his wife: 'By Allah, my two arrows have struck him. If he were a spying creature, he would have moved. When morning comes, look for my two arrows and take them, so the dogs do not chew them up on me.' He said: We gave them respite until their cattle returned in the evening, until they had milked and rested them, or settled down, and a portion of the night had passed, then we launched the raid upon them. We killed those of them we killed, and drove off the cattle. We turned back, heading home. The cry of the people went out to their tribe for help, and we went out quickly so that we would pass by al-Ḥārith b. al-Barṣāʾ and his companion. We took him along with us, and the cry of the people came to us, and there came upon us what we had no power to withstand. Until when there was nothing between us and them but the bottom of the valley, a flood came and stood between us and them. Allah, Exalted, sent it from wherever He willed, and we had not seen before that any rain or cloud. It brought what no one could stand against. We saw them standing, looking at us, none of them able to advance, while we drove the cattle quickly until we brought them up into al-Mushallal. Then we drove them down away from us, and we eluded the people with what was in our hands.
