✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a raid, and the people were struck by severe hunger. The people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to slaughter some of their riding camels, and they said, “Allah will enable us to reach with it.” When ‘Umar b. al-Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was about to permit them to slaughter some of their riding camels, he said, “O Messenger of Allah, how will we be if we meet the people tomorrow hungry and on foot? But if you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, call for the remains of their provisions and gather them, then supplicate Allah for blessing in them, for Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will bring us through your supplication” – or he said, “He will bless us in your supplication.” So the Prophet ﷺ called for the remains of their provisions. The people began bringing handfuls of food and more than that, and the most anyone brought was a sa’ of dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered it all, then stood and supplicated as much as Allah willed him to supplicate. Then he called the army with their vessels and ordered them to scoop. Not a single vessel in the army remained but they filled it, and the same amount remained. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars showed and said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah. No believing servant will meet Allah with these two without the Fire being veiled from him on the Day of Resurrection.”
