✧ Abd Allah b. Muhayriz, who was an orphan under the care of Abu Mahdhurah, informed him—Rawh said: Ibn Mi'yar, but Ibn Bakr did not say that—when he prepared him to go to Syria. He said: I said to Abu Mahdhurah: 'O uncle, I am going to Syria and I fear that I may be asked about your adhan.' He told me that Abu Mahdhurah said to him: 'Yes. I went out with a group of people, and we were on part of the road to Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was returning from Hunayn, and we met him on part of the road. The mu'adhdhin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the adhan for prayer in his presence, and we heard the voice of the mu'adhdhin while we were off to the side. We shouted, imitating him and mocking him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ heard the sound and sent for us until we stood before him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Which of you is the one whose voice I heard raised?" The people all pointed to me, and they were truthful. He sent them all away and kept me. He said: "Stand and call the adhan for prayer." I stood, and nothing was more hateful to me than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ or what he commanded me to do. I stood before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he himself taught me the adhan. He said: "Say: Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah; ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah." Then he said to me: "Go back and extend your voice." Then he said: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah; ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah, ashhadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah; hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-salah; hayya 'ala al-falah, hayya 'ala al-falah; Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illa Allah." Then, when I finished the adhan, he called me and gave me a pouch containing some silver. Then he placed his hand on the forelock of Abu Mahdhurah, then passed it over his face, then over his chest, then over his belly, and the hand of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached the navel of Abu Mahdhurah. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah bless you." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, command me to call the adhan in Makkah." He said: "I have commanded you to do it." All hatred of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that I had left, and it turned into love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then I came to Attab b. Asid, the governor of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Makkah, and called the adhan with him for prayer by the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.'
