✧ ʿIyāḍ b. Ghanm flogged the ruler of Dārā when it was conquered, and Hishām b. Ḥakīm spoke harshly to him until ʿIyāḍ became angry. Then some nights later, Hishām b. Ḥakīm came to him and apologized. Then Hishām said to ʿIyāḍ: “Did you not hear the Prophet ﷺ say: ‘Among the people most severely punished are those most severe in punishing people in this world’?” ʿIyāḍ b. Ghanm said: “O Hishām b. Ḥakīm, we have heard what you heard and seen what you saw. Did you not hear the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘Whoever wants to advise a ruler about a matter should not do so openly, but should take him by the hand and be alone with him. If he accepts it from him, then that is that; otherwise he has fulfilled what was due from him’? And you, Hishām, are indeed bold—you dare to confront God’s ruler. Why did you not fear that the ruler might kill you, and you would become a victim of God’s ruler, Blessed and Exalted?”
