حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ قَرْمٍ عَنْ سِمَاكٍ عَنْ حُمَيْدِ ابْنِ أُخْتِ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ قَالَ

كُنْتُ نَائِمًا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ عَلَى خَمِيصَةٍ لِي، فَسُرِقَتْ، فَأَخَذْنَا السَّارِقَ، فَرَفَعْنَاهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَأَمَرَ بِقَطْعِهِ، فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفِي خَمِيصَةٍ ثَمَنُ ثَلَاثِينَ دِرْهَمًا ؟! أَنَا أَهَبُهَا لَهُ، أَوْ أَبِيعُهَا لَهُ، قَالَ: فَهَلَّا كَانَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَأْتِيَنِي بِهِ

Translation

✧ I was sleeping in the mosque on a cloak of mine, and it was stolen. We caught the thief and brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who ordered that his hand be cut off. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, for a cloak worth thirty dirhams? I give it to him, or I sell it to him.' He said: 'If only it had been before you brought him to me.'
