✧ I came to Jabir b. Abdullah and said: 'Tell me a hadith that you witnessed from the Messenger of God ﷺ.' He said: 'My father died leaving a debt of twenty wasqs of dates. We had various kinds of dates, but the ajwah dates were not enough to pay off the debt. I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He sent for my creditor, but he refused anything except to take all the ajwah dates. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Go and give him." So I went with a female companion of mine to a trellis of ours and harvested our dates. We had a goat that we fed with dry dates, and it had become fat. Then two men approached us—the Messenger of God ﷺ and Umar. I said: "Welcome, O Messenger of God," and to Umar: "Welcome, O Umar." The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me: "O Jabir, come with us so we can walk through your palm grove." I said: "Yes." We walked through it, and I ordered the goat to be slaughtered. Then we brought a cushion, and the Prophet ﷺ reclined on a cushion of hair stuffed with palm fiber. As for Umar, I found no cushion for him. Then we brought a table of ours with fresh dates, dried dates, and meat, and served it to the Prophet ﷺ and Umar, and they ate. I was a man overwhelmed by shyness. When the Prophet ﷺ got up to leave, my companion said: "O Messenger of God, supplicate for us." He said: "Yes, may God bless you." He said: "Yes, may God bless you." Then I sent for my creditors, and they came with donkeys and sacks. I had resolved to buy ajwah dates for them to pay off the debt my father owed. I paid them in full, and by the One in whose hand is my soul, twenty wasqs of ajwah dates remained as a good surplus. I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ to give him the good news of what God, Mighty and Majestic, had granted me. When I told him, he said: "O God, to You belongs praise; O God, to You belongs praise." Then he said to Umar: "Jabir has paid off his creditor." And Umar praised God.'
