✧ I passed by 'Uthman b. 'Affan in the mosque and greeted him. He filled his eyes with looking at me, then did not return my greeting. I went to the Commander of the Believers 'Umar b. al-Khattab and said: O Commander of the Believers, has anything happened in Islam? Twice. He said: No, and what is that? He said: I said: Nothing except that I passed by 'Uthman just now in the mosque and greeted him, and he filled his eyes with looking at me, then did not return my greeting. He said: So 'Umar sent for 'Uthman and called him, and said: What prevented you from returning your brother's greeting? 'Uthman said: I did not do that. Sa'd said: I said: Yes, you did. He said: Until he swore and I swore. He said: Then 'Uthman remembered and said: Yes, and I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him. You passed by me just now while I was talking to myself about a word I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, I never remember it except that my sight becomes blurred and a covering comes over my heart. He said: Sa'd said: I will tell you what it is. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned to us the first supplication, then a Bedouin came and distracted him until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up. I followed him, and when I feared that he would reach his house before me, I struck the ground with my foot. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to me and said: Who is this, Abu Ishaq? He said: I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: What is it? He said: I said: No, by Allah, except that you mentioned to us the first supplication, then this Bedouin came and distracted you. He said: Yes, the supplication of Dhu al-Nun when he was in the belly of the whale: There is no god but You, glory be to You, I was indeed among the wrongdoers. No Muslim ever calls upon his Lord with it for anything except that He answers him.
