✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent us out, and appointed Abū ʿUbaydah over us to intercept a caravan of Quraysh. He provisioned us with a sack of dates, not finding anything else for us. Abū ʿUbaydah would give us one date at a time. I said, "How did you manage with it?" He said, "We would suck it as a child sucks, then drink water upon it, and it would suffice us for our day until night. We would also strike leaves with our sticks, then moisten them with water and eat them." He said, "We set out along the seashore, and a thing like a massive sand dune appeared to us on the shore. We came to it and found it was a creature called al-ʿanbar. Abū ʿUbaydah said, 'It is carrion.'" Ḥasan b. Mūsā said, "Then he said, 'No, rather we are the messengers of the Messenger of God ﷺ.'" Hāshim said in his narration, "He said: 'Then I said: No, rather we are the messengers of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and in the path of God. You have been compelled, so eat.' We stayed by it for a month while we were three hundred, until we grew fat. I saw us scooping oil from the socket of its eyes with large vessels, and cutting from it pieces like an ox — or like the size of an ox. Abū ʿUbaydah took thirteen men from us and seated them in the socket of its eye. He took one of its ribs and set it upright, then mounted the largest camel with us." Ḥasan said, "Then mounted the largest camel that was with us" — "and it passed beneath it. We provisioned ourselves with its meat and dried strips. When we reached Madinah, we came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and mentioned that to him. He said, 'It is provision God [Mighty and Majestic] brought out for you. Do you have any of its meat with you to feed us?' So we sent some of it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he ate it.
