✧ I came to Madinah and arrived there while a disease had broken out there and people were dying rapidly. I sat with Umar b. al-Khattab, and a funeral procession passed by him. The deceased was praised with good, and Umar said: It has become due. Then another passed by, the deceased was praised with good, and Umar said: It has become due. Then a third passed by, and it was spoken of with evil, and Umar said: It has become due. Abu al-Aswad said: What has become due, O Commander of the Believers? He said: I said as the Messenger of God ﷺ said: Any Muslim for whom four testify to good, God will admit him to Paradise. He said: We said: And three? He said: And three. He said: We said: And two? He said: And two. He said: Then we did not ask him about one.

machine translationʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah narrated it, and there is disagreement about him. Dāwūd b. Abī al-Furāt, who is trustworthy (thiqah), narrated it from Ibn Buraydah, and there is disagreement about Dāwūd as well. Yaʿqūb al-Ḥaḍramī said, from him, from Ibn Buraydah, from Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar, from Abū al-Aswad. He erred in mentioning Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmar in its chain, because of the many trustworthy memorizers (ḥuffāẓ) who contradicted him from Dāwūd, among them ʿAffān b. Muslim, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAbd al-Wārith, Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb, Yūnus b. Muḥammad al-Muʾaddib, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Muqriʾ, Abū al-Walīd al-Ṭayālisī, Shaybān b. Farrūkh and others. They narrated it from Dāwūd, from Ibn Buraydah, from Abū al-Aswad, without mentioning anyone between the two. Likewise Saʿīd b. Razīn narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah, from Abū al-Aswad, like the narration of the group from Dāwūd. ʿUmar b. al-Walīd al-Shannī narrated it from ʿAbdullāh b. Buraydah as a mursal report from ʿUmar, without mentioning anyone between them. The preserved (maḥfūẓ) version of this is what ʿAffān and those who followed him narrated from Dāwūd b. Abī al-Furāt.
