✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ consulted the people on the day of Badr. Abu Bakr spoke, but he turned away from him. Then Umar spoke, but he turned away from him. The Ansar said, 'O Messenger of Allah, do you mean us?' He said, 'Yes.' Then al-Miqdad b. al-Aswad said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by the One in whose hand is my soul, if you commanded us to plunge into the sea, we would plunge into it, and if you commanded us to strike their livers to Bark al-Ghimad, we would do it. So proceed as you see fit, O Messenger of Allah.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ urged his companions, and they set out until they camped at Badr. Then the water-carriers of Quraysh came, among them a black slave belonging to Banu al-Hajjaj. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seized him and asked him about Abu Sufyan and his companions. He said, 'As for Abu Sufyan, I have no knowledge of him, but here are Quraysh, Abu Jahl, and Umayyah b. Khalaf; they have come.' They would beat him, and when they beat him, he would say, 'Yes, this is Abu Sufyan.' When they left him alone and asked him about Abu Sufyan, he said, 'I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but here are Quraysh; they have come.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying, and he finished and said, 'You beat him when he tells you the truth, and you leave him when he lies to you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand and said, 'This is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, and this is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, if Allah Almighty wills.' They met, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, defeated them. By Allah, none of them moved from the spot of the Prophet's ﷺ palms. He said: The Prophet ﷺ went out to them after three days, and they had begun to decompose. He said, 'O Abu Jahl, O Utbah, O Shaybah, O Umayyah, have you found what your Lord promised you to be true? For I have found what my Lord promised me to be true.' Umar said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, you call them after three days when they have decomposed?' He said, 'You are not more able to hear what I say than they are, except that they cannot answer.' Then he ordered that they be dragged by their feet and thrown into the well of Badr.
