✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ sent Ḥarām, his maternal uncle, the brother of Umm Sulaym, with seventy men, they were killed on the day of Biʾr Maʿūnah. The chief of the polytheists that day was ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl. He had come to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Choose from me one of three options: the people of the plain will be yours and the people of the woolly desert will be mine, or I will be your successor after you, or I will raid you with a thousand chestnut horses and a thousand chestnut mares of Ghaṭafān.' He said, 'Then he was stabbed in the house of a woman of Banū so-and-so, and he said, "A gland like the gland of a camel, in the house of a woman of Banū so-and-so. Bring me my horse." It was brought to him, and he mounted it and died while on its back.' Then Ḥarām, the brother of Umm Sulaym, set out with two men: one from Banū Umayyah and a lame man. He said to them, 'Stay close to me until I go to them. If they grant me protection, good; otherwise, stay near. If they kill me, inform your companions.' So Ḥarām went to them and said, 'Will you grant me protection so that I may convey to you the message of the Messenger of God ﷺ?' They said, 'Yes.' He began to speak to them, but they gestured to one of their men from behind him, and he stabbed him with a spear until it passed through him. He said, 'God is greatest! I have succeeded, by the Lord of the Kaʿbah!' Then they killed all of them except the lame man, who was on top of a mountain. Anas said, 'Then it was revealed to us, and it was among what was recited, then it was abrogated: "Inform our people that we have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and has pleased us."' He said, 'Then the Prophet ﷺ supplicated against them for forty mornings, against Riʿl, Dhakwān, Banū Liḥyān, and ʿUṣayyah, those who disobeyed God and His Messenger.'
