✧ That 'Ali was in Yemen, and they dug a pit for a lion. Then a man came and fell into it, and he clung to another, and the other clung to another, and that other clung to another, until they became four. The lion wounded them in it; some of them died in it, and some were brought out and then died. He said: They disputed over that until they took up weapons. He said: 'Ali came to them and said: "Woe to you! Will you kill two hundred people over the affair of four individuals? Come, I will judge among you with a judgment; if you are satisfied with it, then fine, otherwise take it up to the Prophet ﷺ." He said: So he ruled for the first one a quarter of his blood money, for the second a third of his blood money, for the third half of his blood money, and for the fourth the full blood money. He said: Some of them were pleased, and some disliked it, and he placed the blood money on the tribes of those who crowded together. He said: So they took it up to the Prophet ﷺ—Bahz said: Hammad said: I think he said: He was reclining, then he sat up—he said: "I will judge among you with a judgment." He said: Then he was informed that 'Ali had ruled such and such. He said: So he approved his ruling. 'Affan said: "I will judge among you."

machine translationThis Ḥanash is Ibn al-Muʿtamir, and some say Ibn Rabīʿah. He was a Follower (tābiʿī); Simāk and al-Ḥakam b. ʿUtaybah narrated from him. al-Bukhārī said: "They speak about his ḥadīth," and he included this ḥadīth of his in his book of weak narrators (ḍuʿafāʾ). al-Nasāʾī said: "He is not strong (laysa bi-l-qawī)." Ibn Ḥibbān said: "He is not to be used as evidence; he is alone in narrating from ʿAlī things that do not resemble the ḥadīth of the trustworthy." al-Bayhaqī said: "He is not to be used as evidence." Abū Ḥātim said: "He was a righteous servant, but I do not think they use his ḥadīth as evidence." Abū Dāwūd declared him trustworthy (thiqah). al-Bazzār said about this ḥadīth of his: "We know of him only narrating from ʿAlī, and we know of no route for it from ʿAlī except this route."
