  1. my father

✧ Abū Ṭalḥah married Umm Sulaym, the mother of Anas and al-Barāʾ. She bore him a young son, and he loved him dearly. The boy fell severely ill. Abū Ṭalḥah would get up for the dawn prayer, perform ablution, come to the Prophet ﷺ and pray with him, and remain with him until about midday. Then he would come home, take a nap, and eat. After praying ẓuhr, he would prepare and leave, not returning until the night prayer. One evening, he went out and the boy died. When Abū Ṭalḥah came home, she covered the child with a cloth and left him. Abū Ṭalḥah asked her: "Umm Sulaym, how did my son fare last night?" She replied: "Abū Ṭalḥah, since he fell ill, your son has never been more restful than he was tonight." Then she brought him food and he ate, and his soul was soothed. He got up to his bed and laid his head down. She said: "I got up, applied some perfume, and then came and entered the bed with him. As soon as he smelled the perfume, what happens between a man and his wife took place." In the morning, Abū Ṭalḥah got ready as he did every day. She said to him: "Abū Ṭalḥah, tell me, if a man entrusted you with a deposit and you benefited from it, and then he asked for it and took it from you, would you grieve over that?" He said: "No." She said: "Your son has died." Anas said: He grieved deeply over him and told the Messenger of Allah ﷺ what had happened regarding the food, the perfume, and his intimacy with her. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Really? The two of you spent the night as newlyweds while he was beside you?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "May Allah bless you both in your night." Umm Sulaym conceived that night. She gave birth to a boy. In the morning, Abū Ṭalḥah said to me: "Carry him in a cloth and take him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and take some ʿajwah dates with you." I carried him in a cloth, and he had not yet been given taḥnīk or tasted any food or anything. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, Umm Sulaym has given birth." He said: "Allahu Akbar! What did she give birth to?" I said: "A boy." He said: "Praise be to Allah." Then he said: "Bring him to me." I handed him over, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed taḥnīk on him. Then he said: "Do you have ʿajwah dates with you?" I said: "Yes." I took out some dates, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took one date, put it in his mouth, and kept chewing it until it mixed with his saliva. Then he gave the baby back. As soon as the baby tasted the sweetness of the date, he began sucking the sweetness of the date and the saliva of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The first thing that entered the baby's stomach was the saliva of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The Anṣār love dates." He was named ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah. He had many descendants. ʿAbd Allāh was martyred in Persia.
