✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to punish for [drinking] wine with sandals and palm branches. Then Abu Bakr gave forty lashes. When it was the time of Umar and people drew near to the countryside and villages, he consulted the people about that, and it became widespread among the people. Abd al-Rahman b. Awf said, 'I think you should make it like the lightest of the fixed punishments.' So Umar gave eighty lashes.
