✧ When this verse was revealed: 'O you who believe, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet' up to His saying 'while you do not perceive,' Thabit ibn Qays ibn al-Shammas had a loud voice. He said: "I am the one who used to raise my voice above the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. My deeds have become worthless; I am among the people of the Fire." He sat among his family in grief. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed his absence, so some of the people went to him and said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has noticed your absence. What is the matter with you?" He said: "I am the one who raises my voice above the voice of the Prophet ﷺ and speaks loudly. My deeds have become worthless, and I am among the people of the Fire." They came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what he said. He said: "No, rather he is among the people of Paradise." Anas said: "We used to see him walking among us, and we knew that he was among the people of Paradise. When the day of al-Yamamah came, there was some retreat among us, and Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas came, having embalmed himself and put on his shroud. He said: 'How badly you accustom your peers!' Then he fought them until he was killed."
