What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translational-Tirmidhī gave preference to its being mursal (mursal).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11910
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translational-Dāraquṭnī gave preference to its being mursal (mursal).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11910
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11910

machine translationThere is inconsistency (iḍṭirāb) in this report. Sufyān al-Thawrī, may God be pleased with him, narrated it from ʿAmr b. Yaḥyā, from his father, from the Prophet, peace be upon him, as a mursal report (mursal). Ḥammād b. Salamah narrated it from ʿUrwah b. Yaḥyā and traced it back to Abū Saʿīd (musnad). Muḥammad b. Isḥāq narrated it from ʿAmr b. Yaḥyā, once tracing it back and once as mursal, though most of his narration was as mursal. It seems that the narration of al-Thawrī is more firmly established and more authentic.

  • al-Tirmidhi

machine translationḤammād b. Salamah narrated it from ʿAmr b. Yaḥyā, from his father, from Abū Saʿīd. Al-Thawrī narrated it from ʿAmr b. Yaḥyā, from his father, from the Prophet ﷺ. It seems that the narration of al-Thawrī is more authentic and more firmly established. Two narrations about it were also reported from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Muḥammad. This is a hadith in which there is inconsistency (iḍṭirāb).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11910
  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationThe preserved (maḥfūẓ) version is the mursal one.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11910
  • Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd

machine translationThis is the sum of what was given as the defect (ʿillah) of the connected version in favor of the mursal one. But if the one who connected it is trustworthy (thiqah), then it is acceptable.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11910
  • Abū Zakariyyā Yaḥyá b. Sharaf al-Nawawī

    in مسند أحمد, p. 11910
