✧ A man killed ninety-nine people. He asked about the most learned person on earth and was directed to a man. He went to him and said: 'He has killed ninety-nine people; is there any repentance for him?' The man said: 'He has killed ninety-nine people, so there is no repentance for him.' So he drew his sword and killed him, making a hundred. He remained as long as Allah willed, then asked about the most learned person on earth and was directed to a man. He said: 'He has killed a hundred people; is there any repentance for him?' The man said: 'And who can stand between him and repentance? Leave the wicked village you are in and go to such-and-such village, and worship your Lord, Mighty and Majestic, there.' So he set out, and his appointed time came upon him. The angels of punishment and the angels of mercy disputed over him. Iblis said: 'He never disobeyed me even for an hour.' The angels of mercy said: 'He came out repentant.' Humayd claimed that Bakr narrated to him, from Abu Rafi', who said: 'So Allah sent an angel, and they referred their dispute to him.' Then the hadith returned to the narration of Qatadah, who said: 'See which of the two villages he was closer to, and attach him to it.' Qatadah said: 'So Allah brought the righteous village near to him and moved the wicked village away from him, and they attached him to its people.'
