✧ A man among the people who came before was blessed by God with wealth and children. When death approached him, he called his sons and said, 'What kind of father was I to you?' They said, 'The best father.' He said, 'By God, he never stored up any good with God at all. When I die, burn me until I become charcoal, then crush me, then scatter me on a windy day—meaning a violent wind.' He said, 'And the Prophet of God ﷺ said: He took their pledges on that, by my Lord. They did it, by my Lord. When he died, they burned him until he became charcoal, then crushed him, then scattered him on a violent windy day. His Lord said, "Be," and he was a man standing. His Lord said to him, "What made you do what you did?" He said, "My Lord, I feared Your punishment." He said, "By the One in whose hand is Muhammad's soul, nothing else rescued him except that God forgave him."' Al-Hasan once said: 'Nothing else met him except that God forgave him.' Qatadah said: 'A man who feared God's punishment, and God saved him from his fear.'
