✧ Some people from the Anṣār gathered and said, “Others have been preferred over us.” That reached the Prophet ﷺ, so he gathered them and addressed them, saying, “O company of the Anṣār, were you not lowly, and God exalted you?” They said, “God and His Messenger have spoken truly.” He said, “Were you not astray, and God guided you?” They said, “God and His Messenger have spoken truly.” He said, “Were you not poor, and God enriched you?” They said, “God and His Messenger have spoken truly.” Then he said, “Will you not answer me? Will you not say, ‘You came to us driven out, and we sheltered you; you came to us fearful, and we gave you safety’? Are you not pleased that the people go with sheep and cows—meaning cattle—while you go with the Messenger of God ﷺ and bring him into your homes? If the people took a valley or a mountain pass, and you took a valley or a mountain pass, I would take your valley or your mountain pass. Were it not for the emigration, I would have been a man of the Anṣār. And indeed, you will encounter after me selfishness, so be patient until you meet me at the pool.”
