I came to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and he was surrounded by people. When the people departed from him I said: I am not going to ask you what these people have been asking you. I want to ask you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He (Abu Sa'id) said: There is no good for you in this. He (Qaz'a), however, repeated (his demand). He then said: The noon prayer would start and one of us would go to Baqi' and, having relieved himself, would come to his home, then perform ablution and go to the mosque, and (he would find) The Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the first rak'ah. machine translationHe said: And I asked him about zakāh. He said: I do not know whether he traced it back to the Prophet ﷺ or not: On two hundred dirhams, five dirhams; and on forty sheep, one sheep, up to one hundred and twenty; if it exceeds that by one, then two sheep, up to two hundred; if it exceeds that, then three sheep, up to three hundred; if it exceeds that, then for every hundred, one sheep. And on camels: on five, one sheep; on ten, two sheep; on fifteen, three sheep; on twenty, four sheep; on twenty-five, a bint makhāḍ (a female camel in its second year), up to thirty-five; if it exceeds by one, then a bint labūn (a female camel in its third year), up to forty-five; if it exceeds by one, then a ḥiqqah (a camel in its fourth year), up to sixty; if it exceeds by one, then a jadhaʿah (a camel in its fifth year), up to seventy-five; if it exceeds by one, then two bint labūn, up to ninety; if it exceeds by one, then two ḥiqqah, up to one hundred and twenty; if it exceeds that, then for every fifty, a ḥiqqah, and for every forty, a bint labūn. And I asked him about fasting while travelling. He said: We travelled with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Mecca while we were fasting. He said: We stopped at a stopping place and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: You have drawn near to your enemy, and breaking the fast is stronger for you. So it was a concession, and some of us fasted and some of us broke the fast. Then we stopped at another stopping place and he said: You will meet your enemy in the morning, and breaking the fast is stronger for you, so break your fast. So it was an obligation.
