✧ A man came from Najran to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ wearing a gold ring. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned away from him and did not ask him about anything. The man returned to his wife and told her. She said: 'You must have done something; go back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' He went back to him, threw away his ring and a cloak he was wearing. When he asked permission, he was granted permission, and he greeted the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who returned the greeting. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, you turned away from me earlier when I came to you?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'You came to me with a coal of fire in your hand.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, then I have brought many coals,' as he had brought jewelry from Bahrain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What you have brought does not avail us anything, just as the stones of the Harrah do not avail, but it is the enjoyment of this worldly life.' The man said: 'O Messenger of Allah, excuse me to your companions so they do not think you are displeased with me for any reason.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up and excused him, and informed them that what happened was only because of his gold ring.
