✧ When Umar b. al-Khattab reached Sargh, he was told that there was a severe plague in Syria. He said: It has reached me that the plague is severe in Syria. I said: If my term overtakes me while Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah is alive, I will appoint him as my successor. If Allah asks me why I appointed him over the community of Muhammad ﷺ, I will say: I heard Your Messenger ﷺ say: Indeed, every prophet has a trustee, and my trustee is Abu 'Ubaydah b. al-Jarrah. The people objected to that and said: What about the nobility of Quraysh? — meaning Banu Fihr. Then he said: If my term overtakes me and Abu 'Ubaydah has died, I will appoint Mu'adh b. Jabal as my successor. If my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, asks me why I appointed him, I will say: I heard Your Messenger ﷺ say: Indeed, he will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection before the scholars at a short distance.
