✧ Abu Hirr, I said: 'At your service, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Go to the people of the Suffah and invite them for me.' He said: 'The people of the Suffah were the guests of Islam; they had no family or wealth to resort to. When a gift came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, he would take some of it and send some to them. When charity came to him, he would send it all to them and not take any of it.' He said: 'That grieved me, for I had hoped to get a drink of the milk to strengthen myself for the rest of my day and night. I said: I am the messenger, so when the people come, I will be the one giving it to them. I said: What will be left for me from this milk? There was no escape from obeying God and obeying His Messenger. So I went and invited them, and they came. They asked permission, and he permitted them. They took their seats in the house. Then he said: "Abu Hirr, take it and give it to them." I took the bowl and began giving it to them. Each man took the bowl and drank until he was satiated, then returned the bowl. I gave it to the next, and he drank until he was satiated, then returned the bowl, until I came to the last of them. I handed it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he took the bowl and placed it in his hand. There remained some leftover in it. Then he raised his head, looked at me, and smiled. He said: "Abu Hirr." I said: "At your service, O Messenger of God." He said: "I and you are left." I said: "You have spoken the truth, O Messenger of God." He said: "Sit down and drink." He said: So I sat down and drank. Then he said: "Drink," and I drank. Then he said: "Drink," and I drank. He kept saying: "Drink," and I drank until I said: "No, by the One who sent you with the truth, I find no place for it." He said: "Hand me the bowl." So I returned the bowl to him, and he drank the leftover.
