✧ He liked clusters of dates, holding them in his hand. One day he entered the mosque with one in his hand and saw sputum in the direction of the qiblah of the mosque. He scraped them off with it until he cleaned them. Then he turned to the people angry and said: Would any of you like a man to face him and spit in his face? When one of you stands for prayer, he is facing his Lord, and the angel is on his right, so let him not spit in front of him or to his right, but to his left or under his left foot. If he is overtaken by sudden spittle, let him spit like this.

machine translationIt is narrated by al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Dhubāb and Muḥammad b. ʿAjlān. There is disagreement about Ibn ʿAjlān: Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Ibn ʿUyaynah, Khālid b. al-Ḥārith, Abū Khālid al-Aḥmar and Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Mujabbir narrated it from Ibn ʿAjlān, from Nāfiʿ, from Abū Saʿīd. It is gharīb from al-Thawrī; he was singled out in narrating it from him, and it is an error (wahm). The correct version is the hadith of ʿIyāḍ from Abū Saʿīd; the correct version is the hadith of ʿIyāḍ from Abū Saʿīd.
