✧ Some people from the people of al-Kufa rode to Uthman b. Affan and informed him about the matter of al-Walid – that he drank wine. Ali spoke to him about that, and Uthman said to him: Take charge of your cousin and carry out the prescribed punishment on him. He said: Get up, Hasan, and flog him. He said: What are you in this? Appoint someone other than me. He said: Rather, you have become weak and feeble. Get up, Abdullah b. Ja'far, and flog him. He began flogging him while Ali counted until it reached forty. Then he said: Stop – or: let him go. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ flogged forty, Abu Bakr forty, and Umar completed it to eighty, and all are sunnah.
