✧ A man from the people of Syria sat with Abdullah b. Umar while I was with him, and said to him: 'O Abu Abd al-Rahman, what do you think of performing tamattu with an umrah to the hajj?' Abdullah said to him: 'It is good and beautiful for whoever does that.' The man said to him: 'But your father used to forbid it.' Abdullah became angry, then said: 'Woe to you! Consider: if my father forbade it, and the Messenger of God ﷺ practiced it, would you follow the command of the Messenger of God or the command of my father?' He said: 'No, rather the command of the Messenger of God.' He said: 'Indeed, the Messenger of God ﷺ did that, so go about your business.'

machine translationThe narration of Ibn ʿUmar concerning tamattuʿ cannot be relied upon, for two reasons. One of them is that his statement is inconsistent (muḍṭarib): Bakr b. ʿAbdullāh narrated from him that he said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pronounced the talbiyah for Hajj alone.
