✧ A black wind blew in Kufa, and a man came whose only refrain was: "O Abdullah b. Mas'ud, the Hour has come!" He was reclining, and he sat up and said: "The Hour will not come until no inheritance is divided and no booty is rejoiced over." And he said: "An enemy will gather against the people of Islam, and the people of Islam will gather against them." And he gestured with his hand towards Syria. I said: "Do you mean the Romans?" He said: "Yes." He said: "And at that fighting there will be a severe apostasy. A detachment will be pledged for death that will not return except victorious. They will fight until night separates them, and these and those will withdraw, neither being victorious, and the detachment will perish. Then the Muslims will pledge a detachment for death that will not return except victorious. They will fight until evening, and night separates them, and these and those will withdraw, neither being victorious, and the detachment will perish. Then the Muslims will pledge a detachment for death that will not return except victorious. They will fight until evening, and these and those will withdraw, neither being victorious, and the detachment will perish. Then on the fourth day the rest of the people of Islam will advance against them, and Allah will put defeat upon them, and they will be slain with a slaughter—either he said: the like of which will not be seen, or he said: the like of which has not been seen—until a bird passes by their sides, it will not pass them without falling dead. Then the sons of one father will count themselves; they were a hundred and they will not find that any of them remains except one man. So what booty is rejoiced over, or what inheritance is divided? While they are thus, they hear of people more numerous than that: the cry comes to them that the Dajjal has taken their place among their offspring. So they leave what is in their hands and turn back, and they send ten horsemen as a scouting party. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I indeed know their names, their fathers' names, and the colors of their horses. They are the best horsemen on the face of the earth on that day'—or he said: 'They are the best horsemen on the face of the earth on that day.'"
