machine translationWe read to ʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Maʿmar, from Ayyūb, from Ḥumayd b. Hilāl al-ʿAdawī, from a man whom he named, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said:
Machine translation, not reviewed
We were sitting with him in Kufa when a red wind blew, and the people began to say: "The Hour has come!" Then a man came who had no other cry, saying: "The Hour has come, O Ibn Masʿūd! The Hour has come, O Ibn Masʿūd!" So he sat upright, angry, for he had been reclining, and said: "By God, the Hour will not come until no inheritance is divided and no one rejoices over war booty." And he said: "There will be a defection (riddah) between you and those people — Ḥumayd said: I said to the man: 'Do you mean the Romans?' He said: 'Yes' — and the believers will call on one another for reinforcement, and they will fight. A detachment will pledge itself to death, not to return except victorious. They will fight until night comes between them, and each side will withdraw, and neither is victorious, and the detachment will be wiped out. Then the second day is the same, then the third day is the same. Then on the fourth day the remainder of the Muslims will advance against them, and there will be a slaughter the like of which has not been seen, so that the sons of one father would count themselves off to reach a hundred, and none of them would remain except one man." Ibn Masʿūd said: "Then will any inheritance be divided here?" — Maʿmar said: Qatādah used to connect this hadith — He said: "Then they will march on until they enter Constantinople, and they will find in it so much gold and silver that a man will hop along, burdened with it. While they are in that state, a cry comes to them that the Antichrist (al-Dajjāl) has taken their place among your families. So they will throw down what is in their hands." Ibn Masʿūd said: "Will anyone rejoice here over booty?" "They will send out a vanguard of ten horsemen, or twelve." Ibn Masʿūd said: The Prophet ﷺ said: "I know their names, their tribes, and the colors of their horses. They are on that day the best horsemen on the earth." Then the Antichrist will fight them and they will be martyred.
