حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، قَالَ:

كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَارٍ، فَأُنْزِلَتْ عَلَيْهِ: وَالْمُرْسَلاتِ عُرْفًا فَجَعَلْنَا نَتَلَقَّاهَا مِنْهُ، فَخَرَجَتْ حَيَّةٌ مِنْ جَانِبِ الْغَارِ، فَقَالَ: اقْتُلُوهَا، فَبَادَرْنَاهَا، فَسَبَقَتْنَا، فَقَالَ: إِنَّهَا وُقِيَتْ شَرَّكُمْ كَمَا وُقِيتُمْ شَرَّهَا

Translation

✧ We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a cave, and 'By those sent forth in succession' was revealed to him, and we began receiving it from him. Then a snake came out from the side of the cave, and he said: 'Kill it.' We rushed toward it, but it preceded us. He said: 'It has been protected from your evil just as you have been protected from its evil.'
