Chain of narrators
  1. ʿAbdullāh

✧ I was in the mosque on the night before Friday when a man from the Ansar entered and said: “If a man were to find another man with his wife—if he speaks, you flog him; if he kills, you kill him; if he remains silent, he remains silent in rage. By God, I will ask the Messenger of God ﷺ about it.” When the next day came, he went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and asked him, saying: “If a man were to find another man with his wife—if he speaks, you flog him; or if he kills, you kill him; or if he remains silent, he remains silent in rage.” He said: “O God, make it clear,” and continued to supplicate. Then the verse of li‘an was revealed: “And those who accuse their wives and have no witnesses except themselves…” [Q 24:6] these verses. The man was tested among the people, so he and his wife came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and performed li‘an. The man testified four testimonies by God that he was indeed truthful, then invoked the fifth: that the curse of God be upon him if he was among the liars. She went to swear, and the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Stop.” She swore. When they turned away, he said: “Perhaps she will bring a black, curly-haired child.” She brought a black, curly-haired child.
