✧ Rejoice, O Hilal! For God has made for you a way out and an escape!" Hilal said: "I had hoped for that from my Lord, Mighty and Majestic!" The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Send for her." They sent for her, and she came. The Messenger of God ﷺ recited to them both, reminded them, and informed them that the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe than the punishment of this world. Hilal said: "By God, O Messenger of God, I have spoken the truth about her!" She said: "He lies." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Perform li'an between them." It was said to Hilal: "Testify!" So he testified four times by God that he was indeed of the truthful. When it came to the fifth, it was said: "O Hilal, fear God; for the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter, and this is the affirmation that makes punishment incumbent upon you!" He said: "By God, God will not punish me for it, just as He has not flogged me for it!" So he testified the fifth time that the curse of God be upon him if he was of the liars. Then it was said to her: "Testify four times by God that he is indeed of the liars." When it came to the fifth, it was said to her: "Fear God; for the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter, and this is the affirmation that makes punishment incumbent upon you!" She hesitated for a moment, then said: "By God, I will not disgrace my people!" So she testified the fifth time that the wrath of God be upon her if he was of the truthful. The Messenger of God ﷺ separated them, and decreed that her child would not be attributed to any father, nor would she be accused of it, nor would her child be accused. Whoever accused her or accused her child would receive the hadd punishment. He decreed that she had no lodging or provision from him, because they separated without divorce or being widowed. He said: "If she gives birth to a child with reddish hair, thin thighs, and lean legs, then it is Hilal's. If she gives birth to a child with dark complexion, curly hair, plump limbs, sturdy legs, and full buttocks, then it belongs to the one she was accused with." She gave birth to a child with dark complexion, curly hair, plump limbs, sturdy legs, and full buttocks. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Were it not for the oaths, I would have had a matter with her!" Ikrimah said: "He later became a governor over Egypt, and he was called by his mother's name, not by a father's name."
