حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ، قَالَ: قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ:

بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَارٍ إِذْ نَزَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ: وَالْمُرْسَلاتِ عُرْفًا، فَتَلَقَّفْنَاهَا مِنْ فِيهِ، وَإِنَّ فَاهُ لَرَطْبٌ بِهَا، إِذْ خَرَجَتْ حَيَّةٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: اقْتُلُوهَا، قَالَ: فَابْتَدَرْنَاهَا، فَسَبَقَتْنَا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: وُقِيَتْ شَرَّكُمْ وَوُقِيتُمْ شَرَّهَا

Translation

✧ While we were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in a cave, suddenly "By those sent forth in succession" descended upon him, and we received it from his mouth while his mouth was still moist with it. Then a snake came out, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Kill it." We rushed at it, but it got ahead of us. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "It has been protected from your evil, and you have been protected from its evil."
