حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ سَالِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنِ ابْنِ عَقِيلٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ

أَنَّهُ سَمَّى ابْنَهُ الْأَكْبَرَ حَمْزَةَ، وَسَمَّى حُسَيْنًا بِعَمِّهِ جَعْفَرٍ، قَالَ: فَدَعَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ عَلِيًّا، فَلَمَّا أَتَى، قَالَ: غَيَّرْتَ اسْمَ ابْنَيَّ هَذَيْنِ ؟ قُلْتُ: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، فَسَمَّى حَسَنًا وَحُسَيْنًا

Translation

✧ He named his eldest son Hamzah, and he named Husayn after his paternal uncle Ja'far. He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called 'Ali, and when he came, he said: "You changed the names of these two sons of mine?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." So he named them Hasan and Husayn.
