✧ “What is the matter with you, O ʿAʾishah?” She said: “O Messenger of Allah, I am in pain and have a headache.” He said: “Rather, O my head!” She said: “I did not wait but a little while before he was brought to me carried in a cloak. She said: I nursed him, though I had never nursed a sick person before, nor had I ever seen a dead person. She said: He raised his head, so I took hold of him and rested him against my chest. She said: Usamah b. Zayd entered with a fresh toothstick of arak wood in his hand. She said: He glanced toward it. She said: I thought he wanted it, so I took it, chewed it with my mouth to soften it, and handed it to him. She said: He took it and brought it toward his mouth. She said: His hand fell limp, and it dropped from his hand. Then he turned his face toward me until his mouth was at my mouth, and a cold drop flowed from his mouth which made my skin shudder, and the scent of musk rose in my face. Then his head inclined, and I thought he had fainted. She said: I took him and laid him on the bed and covered his face. She said: My father Abu Bakr entered and said: “How do you see him?” I said: “He has fainted.” He drew near, uncovered his face, and said: “O what a faint! How unlike a faint this is!” Then he uncovered his face, recognized death, and said: “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we return.” Then he wept. I said: “For the sake of Allah—the ceasing of revelation and the entry of Jibril into my house.” Then he placed his hands on his temples, put his mouth on his forehead, and wept until his tears flowed over the face of the Prophet ﷺ. Then he covered his face and went out to the people weeping, saying: “O assembly of Muslims, does anyone among you have a covenant regarding the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” They said: “No.” Then he turned to ʿUmar and said: “O ʿUmar, do you have a covenant regarding the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?” He said: “No.” He said: “By the One besides whom there is no god, he has tasted death. He had said to them: ‘I am dying, and you are dying.’” The people wailed and wept bitterly. Then they left him with his family. ʿAli b. Abi Talib washed him while Usamah b. Zayd poured water over him. ʿAli said: “I did not forget any part of him that I had not washed except that it was turned over for me so I could see and wash it without seeing anyone, until I finished with him.” Then they shrouded him in a red Yemeni cloak and two white garments that had been dyed then washed. Then he was laid on the bier, and permission was given to the people. They entered upon him in groups, praying over him without an imam, until no one remained in Madinah, free or slave, except that he prayed over him. Then they disputed about where to bury him. Some said: “By the pulpit where he used to stand and under his minbar.” Others said: “In al-Baqiʿ, where he used to bury his dead.” They said: “We will not do that, for then a slave or slave-girl of yours might become angry with his master and seek refuge at his grave, and it would become a custom.” So their opinion settled on burying him in his house, under his bed where his soul was taken. When Abu Bakr died, he was buried with him. When death came to ʿUmar b. al-Khattab, he left instructions: “When I die, carry me to the door of ʿAʾishah’s house and say to her: ‘This is ʿUmar b. al-Khattab, who sends you greetings of peace and says: May I enter or shall I depart?’” He said: She was silent for a while, then said: “Let him enter, and bury him with him—Abu Bakr on his right and ʿUmar on his left.” She said: When ʿUmar was buried, I took the outer garment and wrapped myself in it. He said: It was said to her: “Why the outer garment?” She said: “This was my husband, and this was my father, so when ʿUmar was buried I wrapped myself.”
