✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ, when he intended a journey, would draw lots among his wives; whichever of them her lot came out, the Messenger of God ﷺ took her out with him. When it was the expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq, he drew lots among his wives as he used to do, and my lot came out over theirs, so the Messenger of God ﷺ took me out with him. She said: Women in those days only ate morsels; they were not stuffed with meat so as to become heavy. When my camel was loaded and I sat in my howdah, the people who loaded it for me would come and lift me from below the howdah, then place it on the back of the camel and tie it with its ropes, then take the head of the camel and set off. She said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ finished that journey of his, he turned back returning, until when he came near Madinah, he stopped at a place and spent part of the night there. Then permission was given to the people to set out, and the people departed. I went out for some need of mine, and around my neck was a necklace of mine made of Dhafir beads. When I finished, it slipped from my neck without my knowing. When I returned to the baggage, I went to feel for it on my neck and did not find it. The people had already begun to depart. I went back to the place I had gone to and searched for it until I found it. The people who loaded the camel for me came behind me and had finished loading it. They took the howdah thinking I was in it, as I used to be, and lifted it up and tied it on the camel without doubting that I was in it, then took the head of the camel and set off with it. I returned to the army, but there was no one calling or answering; the people had gone. She said: I wrapped myself in my outer garment and lay down in my place, knowing that if I were missed, they would return to me. She said: By God, while I was lying down, Safwan b. al-Mu'attal al-Sulami passed by me. He had stayed behind from the army for some need of his and had not followed the people. He saw my dark shape and came until he stood over me. He used to see me before the veil was imposed. When he saw me, he said, 'Indeed we belong to God and to Him we return, a wife of the Messenger of God ﷺ,' while I was wrapped in my garments. He said, 'What kept you back, may God have mercy on you?' She said: I did not speak to him. Then he brought the camel close and said, 'Ride,' and he kept back from me. She said: I rode, and he took the head of the camel and set off quickly seeking the people. By God, we did not catch up with the people, and I was not missed until morning when the people had stopped. When they had settled, the man appeared leading me. The people of the slander said what they said, and the army was thrown into turmoil. By God, I knew nothing of that. Then we arrived in Madinah, and it was not long before I fell severely ill, and none of that reached me. The matter had reached the Messenger of God ﷺ and my parents, but they did not mention anything of it, little or much, except that I sensed something from him: when he entered upon me while my mother was with me nursing me, he said, 'How is this one of yours?' and added nothing. She said: Until I felt something in myself. I said, 'O Messenger of God, when I saw what I saw of his coldness, if you permit me, let me move to my mother's so she can nurse me.' He said, 'No harm.' She said: I moved to my mother, not knowing anything of what had happened, until I recovered from my illness after twenty-some nights. We were an Arab people; we did not adopt these latrines that the non-Arabs adopt in our houses. We disliked and hated them. We used to go to the open grounds of Madinah. Women used to go out every night for their needs. I went out one night for some need, and with me was Umm Mistah, daughter of Abu Ruhm b. 'Abd al-Muttalib b. 'Abd Manaf. Her mother was the daughter of Sakhr b. 'Amir b. Ka'b b. Sa'd b. Taym, the maternal aunt of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq. She said: By God, while she was walking with me, she stumbled in her long garment and said, 'May Mistah perish!' She said: I said, 'How bad, by the life of God, is what you said about a man among the Emigrants who was present at Badr!' She said, 'Has the news not reached you, O daughter of Abu Bakr?' She said: I said, 'What news?' She told me what the people of the slander had said. She said: I said, 'Has this happened?' She said, 'Yes, by God, it has.' She said: By God, I could not finish my need and returned. By God, I kept weeping until I thought that weeping would split my liver. She said: I said to my mother, 'May God forgive you! The people have been talking about what they talked about, and you do not mention anything of it to me?' She said, 'O my little daughter, take the matter lightly. By God, seldom has a beautiful woman been loved by a man who loves her, having co-wives, except that they and the people exaggerate against her.'
