✧ Abu Bakr said to Aisha: 'On which day did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ die?' She said: 'On Monday.' He said: 'What day is this?' She said: 'Monday.' He said: 'As Allah wills. I hope for what is between me and night.' He said to them: 'With what did you shroud him?' She said: 'In three white Sahuli Yemeni garments, with no shirt and no turban.' Abu Bakr said: 'Wash this garment of mine from the stain of saffron or red clay, and with it two other garments.' Aisha said: 'O father, this is worn out.' He said: 'The living are more entitled to the new. It is only for the body.' Abdullah b. Abi Bakr had given them a striped Hullah, and the Messenger of Allah was wrapped in it, then taken out of it, and he was shrouded in three white Sahuli Yemeni garments. Abdullah found the Hullah and said: 'I will shroud myself in something that touched the skin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' Then he said after that: 'No, by Allah, I will not shroud myself in something Allah prevented His Messenger from being shrouded in.' Abu Bakr died on Tuesday night and was buried at night.

machine translationHishām b. ʿUrwah narrated it, and there is disagreement about him regarding its text (matn). Al-Darāwardī narrated it from Hishām, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah: that the Prophet ﷺ was shrouded in three Saḥūlī garments, and a niche-grave (laḥd) was dug for him and mud bricks were set up over him. A group of Hishām's students contradicted him, among them al-Thawrī, Abū Ḍamrah, ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAmr al-Raqqī, Shuʿayb b. Isḥāq, ʿAbdullāh b. Numayr, ʿUmar b. ʿAlī, Abū Muʿāwiyah and Zamʿah b. Ṣāliḥ, from Hishām; they did not mention in it the niche-grave or the mud bricks. Al-Darāwardī alone related that from Hishām. Makḥūl also narrated it from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah, and he too did not mention in it the niche-grave or the mud bricks. That is the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version from Hishām b. ʿUrwah.
