✧ I entered upon Abu Bakr and saw death upon him, so I said: 'Hayj, hayj! One whose tears never cease to be veiled, for he is, at one time, poured forth.' He said to her: 'Do not say that, but say: "And the agony of death comes with the truth—that is what you used to turn away from."' Then he said: 'On which day did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ die?' She said: 'I said: Monday.' He said: 'I hope [to die] between now and nightfall.' She said: 'He did not die until evening fell on Tuesday night, and he was buried before morning.' She said: 'He had said before that: In how many garments was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shrouded?' I said: 'In three white Sahuli garments, with no shirt and no turban.' He looked at a garment in which he had been nursed, which had a stain of saffron or red clay, and said: 'Wash this garment of mine, add two more garments to it, and shroud me in them.' She said: 'I said: This is worn out.' He said: 'The living are more entitled to the new than the dead; it is only for the pus.'
