✧ In the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ there was a man whose devotion and exertion impressed us. We identified him by name to the Messenger of God ﷺ, but he did not recognize him. We described him by his appearance, but he did not recognize him. While we were mentioning him, the man appeared. We said, 'This is he.' He said, 'You are telling me about a man on whose face there is a mark from Satan.' He approached until he stood before them without greeting. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, 'I adjure you by God, did you say when you stood before the assembly: There is no one among the people better or more virtuous than me?' He said, 'O God, yes.' Then he entered to pray. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'Who will kill the man?' Abu Bakr said, 'I will.' He entered upon him and found him praying. He said, 'Glory be to God! Should I kill a man who is praying, when the Messenger of God ﷺ has forbidden striking those who pray?' So he came out. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'What did you do?' He said, 'I disliked killing him while he was praying, and you forbade striking those who pray.' He said, 'Who will kill the man?' Umar said, 'I will.' He entered and found him placing his face (in prostration). Umar said, 'Abu Bakr is better than me.' So he came out. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'What happened?' He said, 'I found him placing his face for God, so I disliked killing him.' He said, 'Who will kill the man?' Ali said, 'I will.' He said, 'You, if you catch him.' He entered upon him and found that he had left. He returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ, who said to him, 'What happened?' He said, 'I found that he had left.' He said, 'If he had been killed, no two men of my community would have differed. He would have been the first and last of them.'
