✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent me, along with al-Zubayr and al-Miqdad, and he said: Go until you reach the meadow of Khakh, for there is a woman there, and with her is a letter that you will find with her. So we went racing, until we came to the meadow, and there was the woman. We said: Bring out the letter. She said: I have no letter with me. We said: You will bring out the letter or we will search your clothes. So she brought it out from her hair braids. Then we came to the Prophet ﷺ, and in it was: From Hatib b. Abi Balta'a to the people of Makkah, informing them of some of the affairs of the Messenger of God ﷺ. So the Messenger of God ﷺ called Hatib and said: What is this? He said: Do not be hasty with me. I was an ally attached to Quraysh, not one of their own, and there is no one among your companions but has in Makkah someone to protect him and look after his family, except me. So I wanted to have a favor with them. I did not do it out of disbelief or apostasy from my religion, nor out of approval of disbelief after Islam. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: He has told you the truth. Umar said: Let me strike the neck of this hypocrite, O Messenger of God. He said to him: He was present at Badr. And what do you know? Perhaps God has looked upon the people of Badr and said: Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you.
