✧ When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf arrived as an emigrant, the Messenger of God ﷺ established brotherhood between him and Saʿd b. al-Rabīʿ. Saʿd said to him, “I have wealth, so half of it is yours, and I have two wives, so look at whichever of them is dearer to you and I will divorce her; when her waiting period ends, you may marry her.” ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said to him, “May God bless you in your family and your wealth. Show me to the market.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ missed him for some days, then he came to him with traces of yellow perfume on him. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to him, “What is this?” He said, “I married a woman of the Anṣār.” He said, “What did you give her as a bridal gift?” He said, “A date-stone of gold” – or: “the weight of a date-stone of gold.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Hold a wedding feast, even with a sheep.”
