✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ conquered Khaybar, al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿIlāṭ said, 'O Messenger of God, I have wealth in Makkah and family there. I want to go to them. Am I absolved if I speak ill of you or say something?' The Messenger of God ﷺ permitted him to say whatever he wished. He said: He went to his wife when he arrived and said, 'Gather whatever you have, for I want to buy from the spoils of Muḥammad and his companions, for they have been plundered and their wealth taken.' He said: That spread in Makkah and grieved the Muslims, while the polytheists showed joy and delight. The news reached al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and he was crippled in his sitting place and could not stand. Maʿmar said: Al-Jazarī informed me, from Miqsam, who said: Al-ʿAbbās took a son of his called Qutham, who resembled the Messenger of God ﷺ, lay on his back, placed him on his chest, and said: 'My beloved Qutham, resembling the one with the prominent nose, always in blessings, in spite of the nose of whoever is spiteful.' Maʿmar said: Thābit said: Anas said: Then he sent a servant of his to al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿIlāṭ and said, 'Woe to you! What have you brought, and what are you saying? What God has promised is better than what you have brought.' Al-Ḥajjāj said to his servant, 'Convey greetings to Abū al-Faḍl and tell him to vacate one of his rooms for me so I can come to him, for the news is as he would like.' His servant came, and when he reached the door, he said, 'Rejoice, Abū al-Faḍl.' Al-ʿAbbās jumped up in joy until he kissed him between the eyes. He told him what al-Ḥajjāj had said, and he freed him. Then al-Ḥajjāj came and told him that the Messenger of God ﷺ had conquered Khaybar and taken their wealth as spoils, that God's shares ran in their wealth, that the Messenger of God ﷺ had chosen Ṣafiyya bt. Ḥuyayy for himself and taken her as his own, and gave her the choice between freeing her so she would be his wife or joining her family, and she chose that he free her and be his wife. 'But I came for what I had here; I wanted to gather it and leave with it. I sought permission from the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he permitted me to say whatever I wished. Keep it hidden from me for three days, then mention whatever occurs to you.' He said: His wife gathered what she had of jewelry and goods, collected it, and gave it to him. Then he departed with it. After three days, al-ʿAbbās came to the wife of al-Ḥajjāj and said, 'What has your husband done?' She told him that he had gone and said, 'May God not grieve you, O Abū al-Faḍl. What reached you was hard on us.' He said, 'Indeed, may God not grieve me. By the praise of God, it was nothing but what we loved, indeed.'
