✧ I saw Ali brought a man, and they said: "He has stolen a camel." He said: "I do not think you stole." He said: "Yes, I did." He said: "Perhaps it was made to appear so to you?" He said: "Yes, I did steal." He said: "Take him, O Qanbar, bind his finger, light the fire, call the butcher to cut it, then wait until I come." When he came, he said to him: "Did you steal?" He said: "No." So he released him. They said: "O Commander of the Believers, why did you release him when he had confessed to you?" He said: "I took him by his statement, and I release him by his statement." Then Ali said: "A man who had stolen was brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he ordered his hand to be cut off, then he wept. It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, why do you weep?' He said: 'How can I not weep when a member of my ummah is being cut off before you?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, could you not have pardoned him?' He said: 'That is an evil authority that pardons the prescribed punishments, but you should pardon among yourselves.'"
