حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ حَدَّثَهُمْ

أَنَّ إِنْسَانًا يَهُودِيًّا مَرَّ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: إِنَّمَا قَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَدَعَاهُ فَأَقَرَّ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: رُدُّوا عَلَيْهِ كَمَا قَالَ

Translation

✧ A Jewish person passed by the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, 'Al-sam 'alaykum (death be upon you).' The Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ responded to him, and the Prophet ﷺ said, 'He only said, al-sam 'alaykum.' So he called him and he admitted it. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Respond to him as he said.'
