✧ Three men set out to seek provision for their families, and they were caught by the sky [i.e., a storm]. A rock fell upon them, leaving only a small opening through which they could not even see a chink. One of them said: “The rock has fallen and obliterated the trace, and no one knows your place except God. So call upon God by the most certain of your deeds.” A man said: “O God, You know that I had two parents, and I used to milk for them in their vessel. When I found them sleeping, I would stand by their heads until they woke up, whenever they woke, out of dislike to disturb their sleep. O God, if You know that I did that only hoping for Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then open a way for us.” He said: A third of the rock moved away. The second said: “O God, if You know that a woman amazed me, and that I set a substitute for her, but when I had power over her, I gave her her full due and left her to herself. O God, if You know that I did that only hoping for Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then open a way for us.” He said: A third of the rock moved away. The other said: “O God, You know that I hired a laborer for work he was to do for me. He came seeking his wages while I was angry, so I rebuffed him, and he went away leaving his wages. So I gathered it for him and invested it until it became a great amount of wealth. Then he came seeking his wages, and I gave him all of that. If I had wished, I would have given him only his original wages. O God, if You know that I did that hoping for Your mercy and fearing Your punishment, then open a way for us.” He said: The rock moved away, and they came out walking.
