حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ، حَدَّثَنَا مُؤَمَّلٌ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَقِيلٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللهِ يَقُولُ:

كُنْتُ أُصَلِّي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ الْمَغْرِبَ، ثُمَّ أَرْجِعُ إِلَى أَهْلِي فِي بَنِي سَلِمَةَ، وَهُمْ عَلَى مِيلٍ مِنَ الْمَدِينَةِ، أَوْ قَالَ: مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ، وَأَنَا أَرَى مَوَاقِعَ النَّبْلِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: الظُّهْرُ كَاسْمِهَا ظُهْرًا، وَالْعَصْرُ وَالشَّمْسُ بَيْضَاءُ نَقِيَّةٌ، وَالْمَغْرِبُ كَاسْمِهَا، وَالْعِشَاءُ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُؤَخِّرُهَا أَحْيَانًا وَيُعَجِّلُهَا أَحْيَانًا.

✧ I used to pray maghrib with the Messenger of God ﷺ, then return to my family in Banū Salima, who were a mile from Madinah—or he said, from the mosque—while I could still see the places where arrows fell. Then he said, "Ẓuhr is as its name indicates, at midday; ʿaṣr while the sun is white and clear; maghrib as its name indicates; and ʿishāʾ—the Prophet ﷺ would sometimes delay it and sometimes hasten it."
